What are the benefits of children’s orthodontics?

Corrects problems

Early orthodontic treatment can address and correct issues that may become a larger problem later down the line, including overbites, underbites and jaw growth.

Improves oral health

Straighter teeth are easier to keep clean, reducing the risk of cavities, gum disease, and other oral health problems.

Boosts self-confidence

A beautiful and healthy smile can significantly enhance the way your child feels about themselves, improving their self-esteem and social life.

Enhances development

We can use orthodontic treatment to improve your child’s facial symmetry, guide proper jaw growth, and create space for your child’s permanent teeth to erupt.

Which braces are available for children?

Fixed metal braces

These are traditionally the most common type of braces for children, and the appliances given if your child is eligible for NHS treatment. Fixed braces are reliable and effective at straightening teeth and correcting bite issues. The metal brackets are attached to your child’s teeth for the duration of treatment – so they are unable to lose them!

Functional braces

These are a great option for correcting bite problems in children and teenagers. Functional braces work by moving your child’s jaw into a more aligned position, and can be used prior to a different type of brace. They are usually worn for 12-18 months and are available on the NHS for eligible patients.

Invisalign clear aligners

Discreet and comfortable clear aligners are now a popular option for children and teenagers who need orthodontic treatment but are not keen on noticeable metal braces. Invisalign treatment uses a series of comfortable clear aligners that fit into your teen’s lifestyle as they straighten their teeth.

Ceramic braces

These work in a very similar way to fixed metal braces but with a cosmetic benefit. They are made of tooth-coloured ceramic, which blends into your child’s teeth and is much less visible when they talk and smile. Discreet ceramic braces are predictable and effective but are only available to private patients.

Frequently asked questions

Will orthodontic treatment hurt?

While some minor discomfort is normal, particularly when braces are first fitted or adjusted, orthodontic treatment is generally not painful. We take every care to ensure your child is comfortable throughout their treatment.

How long will my child's treatment take?

Treatment time varies depending on your child’s individual needs and the complexity of their case. On average, treatment with braces can last from 18 months to 3 years.

What can my child eat with braces?

We’ll give you a detailed list of foods to avoid while wearing braces, such as sticky, chewy, and hard foods. This helps to keep your child’s braces in good condition and ensures their treatment progresses smoothly.

How can I help my child keep their teeth clean during orthodontic treatment?

We’ll teach your child the correct way to brush and floss while wearing braces or aligners. Regular check-ups with your dentist are also very important to ensure their teeth remain healthy during their orthodontic treatment.

My child is nervous about seeing the orthodontist. What can I do?

We understand that some children can be a little anxious. Talk to your child about what to expect at their appointment and reassure them that we’re friendly and gentle. We also have a welcoming and fun environment at our practice to help put them at ease.
