What are lingual braces?

If you’ve always longed for straighter teeth but want a more subtle alternative to traditional braces, lingual braces could be the answer you’ve been looking for. The system combines the reliable and effective nature of fixed braces with a discreet and aesthetic appearance, particularly popular with adults interested in transforming the look of their front teeth.

The lingual braces system uses brackets that are securely fixed to the inside surfaces of your teeth, with a wire threaded through to gradually move the teeth into straighter positions. We use innovative digital technology so your accurate and comfortable brackets achieve the best possible results. Lingual braces can significantly transform your smile and improve your quality of life – discover how they could work for you today!

Retaining your straight smile

At the end of your treatment, we simply remove the lingual brackets from your teeth to complete your new smile! To keep your teeth straight for the long term, we fit you with a custom retainer, which can be fixed behind your teeth or a removable option you can wear overnight.

Frequently asked questions

How long does lingual braces treatment take?

Lingual braces treatment typically takes around 12-18 months, depending on the complexity of your case. For less complex cases, lingual can be used on up to eight of your front teeth and significantly transform your smile in as little as six months.

How much do lingual braces cost?

At our specialist orthodontic clinic in Dorchester, lingual braces start from £3,850. We can give you a more exact cost based on your individual case after your free consultation. We also offer payment in monthly instalments to help you spread the cost of your straight smile – please ask us for more details.

Do they affect my speech?

Hidden braces fixed on the back surfaces on your teeth can cause your speech to temporarily change. You may talk with a slight lisp or another minor speech change for a little while, as your tongue adjusts to the brackets and wires. However, your speech should return to normal within a few weeks, so you will be talking clearly and confidently again before long!

Are lingual braces painful?

You can expect some discomfort when you first get your lingual braces and after routine adjustments are made. This discomfort is usually manageable with over-the-counter pain medication.

Can I eat normally with lingual braces?

Just like with traditional braces, it is best to avoid foods that are hard, sticky, or chewy, as these can damage the brackets and wires. We are happy to give you advice and can provide you with a list of foods to avoid if this helps.

How do I clean hidden braces behind my teeth?

Keeping your lingual braces clean requires careful attention. You will need to use special interdental brushes and floss to remove plaque and food particles from around the brackets and wires. It can take a bit of practice, so we recommend using a mirror to help you reach! When your braces are first fitted, we will show you effective cleaning techniques and we are always on hand to help or advise if you need it.
